I may be thinking about selling it, or I may just want to freshen it up!
I am asked, almost every year, for suggestions of improvements that will help the look of people’s houses. They want the projects to be quick, and they want them to be cheap.
The trouble is, you can’t always have both, and sometimes you can’t have either. But here they are for 2023. You will have to decide if they are quick or cheap enough for you.
Improving the curb appeal of your house can almost always make a significant impact on its overall appearance and value. Here are some key areas to focus on to enhance your home’s curb appeal, whether you’re thinking about putting it on the market, or just wanting it to look better than it does right now.
- Landscaping. You must always maintain a well-manicured lawn by regularly mowing, edging, and removing weeds. This year, add some colorful plants, flowers, and shrubs to enhance the visual appeal. Trim trees and bushes as necessary, and consider adding mulch or decorative stones to flower beds for a polished look.
- Entryway. The front door is a focal point of your home’s exterior. Consider painting it door a fresh, eye-catching color that complements the overall color scheme. Add potted plants or hanging baskets on either side of the door, and ensure that the door hardware is clean and in good condition. Replace them if they won’t buff out!
- Exterior Cleaning. Power wash the exterior walls, driveway, and sidewalks to remove dirt, grime, and stains. Clean the windows inside and out for a sparkling finish. Pay attention to the roof and gutters as well, ensuring they are clean and in good repair.
- Lighting. Install outdoor lighting fixtures strategically to highlight architectural features, pathways, and landscape elements. Well-placed lighting not only enhances safety but also adds a warm and inviting ambiance to your home during the evening hours. They are coming in at lower price points these days.
- Paint and Repairs. If the exterior paint is fading or peeling, consider giving it a fresh coat to revitalize the appearance. Repair cracks or damages to the siding, stucco, or trim. Also, inspect and repair any damaged or worn fixtures, gutters, downspouts, or porch railings.
- Front Porch or Patio. If you have a front porch or patio, create an inviting and cozy space by adding comfortable seating, colorful cushions, and potted plants. A welcoming outdoor area can greatly enhance the curb appeal and create that all-important positive first impression.
- Garage and Driveway. Ensure that the garage door is in good condition and complements the overall appearance of your home. Keep the driveway clean and free of cracks or potholes. Consider adding some decorative elements such as a driveway border or attractive landscaping along the edges.
- Fencing and Gates. If you do have a fence or gate, make sure it is in good condition, properly painted or stained, and free of any damages. A well-maintained fence or gate can significantly enhance the overall appearance of your property. And for goodness sake make SURE it opens properly and effortlessly!
- Address and House Numbers. Make sure that your house numbers are clearly visible from the street. Consider replacing old or worn numbers with new ones that are easy to read and match the style of your home. Adding an attractive address plaque can also contribute to the overall aesthetic.
- Clean and Tidy. Finally, keep the exterior of your house clean and tidy on an ongoing basis. Regularly remove debris, sweep walkways, and keep outdoor furniture and accessories well-maintained.
By focusing on these areas and paying attention to detail, you can significantly improve the curb appeal of your house. They do not all cost money, nor do they quire a contractor’s license. Remember that consistency in maintenance and ongoing care is key to keeping your home looking its best.
