In commercial and residential buildings, safety trends are changing with the introduction of new technologies making them safer and more efficient.
Making Buildings More People Safe
Automated emergency call systems automatically activate when there is an emergency. The system sends out an alert to pre-selected contacts, such as police or fire stations. It takes fire alarm information from the fire panel, uses smart logic/transformation technologies, then broadcasts messages over multiple communication paths.
Security cameras with facial recognition software can identify people by their faces and help identify them if they enter the building again. Facial recognition cameras have emerged as an efficient and cost-effective way to keep family, students, or employees safe.

Cross-laminated timber can be used in virtually any building, from residential to commercial. Because CLT panels are arranged in an alternating wood-grain pattern, they provide improved stability. This arrangement allows CLT panels to support a higher vertical load capacity when used in walls. Additionally, they offer excellent thermal, seismic, and fire performance.
For HVAC systems, the CDC recommends a layered approach to reduce exposures to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This approach includes using multiple mitigation strategies, including improvements to building ventilation, to reduce the spread of disease and lower the risk of exposure.
As electric vehicles approach a 3% penetration of the car market, installing commercial EV charging stations are attractive to many businesses who want to increase their property value. Access to electricity is the foremost requirement for any EV charging station, this is why many people prefer to install their devices in clusters near a power distribution panel.
Installing proper lighting in outdoor parking areas is critical for safety, security, and efficiency. When choosing light options, particularly lamp posts, it’s important to choose poles and bases that are not only attractive but also durable and long-lasting. High precision smart decorative lighting becomes more important than ever in providing beautiful visual appearances for residents, tourism, and commercial activity.
Signage has seen some interesting changes in the past few years. Freestanding monument signs can be elegant and come in a variety of colors that will blend in naturally with your landscaping. Pylon signs provide excellent visibility because they are freestanding, typically reach a minimum of 12 feet high, and rest on concrete foundations. Digital LED signs, or electronic message boards, look incredibly modern and provide versatility.
Making Buildings More Earth Safe
There is a shift toward green building practices which aim at reducing environmental impact by reducing waste and reducing energy consumption. This includes using solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and more efficient heating systems like heat pumps or heat recovery ventilation.
There are a lot of advantages to using solar panels for commercial buildings. Solar power reduces energy consumption and total output for a residential or commercial building. The Solar Investment Tax Credit gives businesses and homeowners a 26% deduction from their federal taxes. Today’s consumers want to shop at places they deem environmentally friendly. Having solar panels on your building naturally creates and projects an image of an environmentally friendly facility. Some well-known and successful companies are already doing this.
By developing strategies to reduce waste and utilize water more efficiently, commercial building owners can drastically lower their costs, and gain recognition as a leader in sustainability. Cloud-connected submetering of building water use allows for yearly, monthly, weekly, daily, and even hourly monitoring of water use.
Recycling is not only good for the planet, but it’s good for business, too. A well-planned and executed recycling program can generate approximately $100.00 in savings per employee per year. Employees are more motivated to work for a company that recycles. A recent study found that workplace sustainability and recycling are more important to millennials than to previous generations.

Whether you’re developing smart fire systems, better, safer, more aesthetically pleasing outdoor lights, or energy efficient and earth-friendly upgrades, your business can save money and be more productive when you embrace the future.
