SIX at-HOME Musts for the pandemic
The government has its own set of suggestions for life during the pandemic which are more like demands. But these suggestions are beyond those. They are more nuanced than those demands. They are but suggestions, suggestions requiring some daily involvement that will cause life to be a bit easier for the ones who practice them.
1 Drink Water
Drink what is probably more water than you are drinking now. First know that if you drink too much, too quickly it can be toxic, so do all things in moderation. Start with at glass or two extra during the day and go incrementally but slowly.
Some say soon you can start the day with a large bottle of water and sip on it slowly throughout the day.
There is one site that recommends dividing your body weight (in pounds) by 2 and drinking that number of ounces daily. You have to build up to that point, of course, but the healthful effects documented on that site seem to be quite dramatic.
More water even increased slowly will bring subtle changes in your health. Some people are almost dehydrated, coffee, tea, alcohol all help dehydrate us.
2 Walk
Walk a few steps. If you have a sedentary lifestyle, you will get tired quickly. You don’t realize how quickly you lose your edge and your muscle mass when you haven’t been walking for a while.
It will come back to you, but slowly at first. So go easy on yourself and remember easy does it.
Some people are proponents for 10,000 steps a day. That number is aimed to help us lose a pound of weight a week. We haven’t even discussed weight here. 10,000 is an awful lot.
You can use a phone app, free. One of my phones is a Samsung, and I have tried out a couple of apps to count my stepa. One pedometer has worked out better for me than the rest. Acme pedometers are great! (Tap or click here for more phone info.)
3 Read a Book
Many Americans read fewer than 1 book a year. Just go for some short books. Maybe read a book or two you already own but have never gotten around to reading. They either seemed interesting when you originally bought them or someone gave them to you. Either way, you have reason to read them now that there is time.
Kindle electronic books are offered at Amazon. Some of them are called short reads. So you can get started with a lesser book that is not so painful to read. Short reads, your interests, and free computer apps all make Amazon pretty much a winner at this.
4 Journal
Your actual journal does not have to be a Moleskine. Even a school composition book will do. They do come is several stylish cover colors. You should journal every day or so. (Tap or click here for more Moleskine info.) (Tap or click here for more composition book info.)
Journal anything just to practice focus. Journal appreciation. Journal weight loss or weight gain. Journal a habit you want to cultivate.
Journal electronically. Journal in writing. I just prefer with pen and ink like the pioneers did
5 Start/complete a Project
Something you can look back on that you completed during the pandemic. You may not even believe it in another year or so.
Refinish a table, put photos together in an album, learn a different language. This is the time to do almost anything you always meant to do.
6 Grow something edible/ornamental
Even if you live apartment, you can grow on something on your balcony. Grow a flower or some lettuce, depending on the type and amount of light on your balcony. Enjoy the flower for a while and the accomplishment for a while.
Eat the lettuce and celebrate your self-sufficiency.
If you live in a house rather than an apartment, you can go wild if you are reading this early in your growing season.
So remember. Do what you need to do to stay healthy firstly. Do what you need to stay legal secondly. But lastly, do one of these to help you stay sane.
Hang in there.
