I ran across a very interesting book yesterday and I read it. I think the actual name was “For Sale By Owner: Wondering Whether to Sell it Yourself or not?!?” although the cover says “For Sale by Owner?” and the cover names the author as “FSBO Pro.”
I don’t think FSBO Pro is the author’s real name and I’m not sure he is one (yet.)
What this book does do, however, is give a simple, down to earth description of the discovery process concerning options in selling your house. The author learns some valid lessons about the industry.
Although the book’s length and the depth of the author’s experience don’t lend themselves to making you an expert in the field, it is a very pleasant read, and not time-consuming like some other FSBO books (I’m sure some of my own included!) But this book does give you a solid foundation of some of the huge differences between selling your own house and having an agent do it for you.
You will probably come away having decided to try it one way or the other.
The author began this story as a seller with a traditional real estate agent working to sell his house. He transitioned into a FSBO, attempting to sell his own house for a while until he eventually transitioned back into using agent representation. This put him in a unique position of being able to see both sides of the coin.
Possibly it also put him in the position of regretting his choice.
In this book will give the reader some pointers about staging your home, hosting open houses, pricing your house, working with buyers, and more. It will definitely open your eyes if you are new to this concept, and could save you several thousand dollars.
We are told that the best teacher is experience, and here I must add that it is other peoples’ experience that is by far the best. So learn from this authors concise, well-written story and decide if the first hand experience is for you.
To quote the author’s own words, “Our house sold, but I really wish we’d stuck with For Sale By Owner instead of wasting money on a useless agent. It’s a really expensive sign to put in your front yard. Good luck whichever way you go!”
I enjoyed the read, and I am speaking as someone in this business, and one who has read a lot of other books about it
