I have been a real estate broker for forty years, and most recently, have been working exclusively with for-sale-by-owners, allowing them to have their houses in the multiple listing service, to have that incredible exposure. After 40 years of doing and watching, and studying, I can tell you that THIS IS WHAT YOU will run in to. It’s BEST you NOT EVEN TRY it if these describe you. YOU WILL END UP MAD AT ME. Like I talked you into this.
Let’s look at those five items, and I promise I am not trying to be ugly or cruel here. They are the truth.

- You won’t read instructions completely, or if you do, you are inclined to ignore them or argue with me over them. like I could change the law or the MLS regulations for you. You must READ or LISTEN TO the instructions carefully, DO WHAT YOU READ, and then STAND BACK AND LOOK AT IT to see if it is what you wanted and expected.
2. YOU THINK YOU KNOW IT ALL or can FAKE IT. You are certain this will be a piece of cake, just like selling a lawnmower. You’ve done this before. or watched somebody do it.
3. Sometimes, you can be IMPATIENT. MANY give their listing a week, and start calling me TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS BEEN CALLING ME about their house. They forgot what I told them about where their number is displayed, and probably forgot to look at the print-out of their new listing to check it. After 3 weeks, they call and ASK IF I KNOW ANY TRICKS, even though I have made available to them 30 books I have written along with countless articles of tricks and hacks I have learned. They usually just want me to sum it all up in one quick solution. By the 4th week, they relist with another traditional agent who will happily take all the money they were going to save.
4. Some are plain old NOT CONFIDENT. In themselves or the system.ALL OTHERS, especially other agents TELL YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE that you will surely regret. Planting that seed of doubt.
5. YOUR PRESENT/PAST OCCUPATION made you quite PROUD OF YOURSELF. YOU MUST DELEGATE YOUR WORK, BUT NOT HERE… you can’t just call your assistant to do your do-it-yourself work. And you can’t put people off, because your assistant is busy doing something else.
Most parts of a transaction would require a licensed person to do them anyway.
Sometimes people will tell me that they used to be an agent. That tells me that things may have changed since then, and they may be unaware it’s not the same animal.
Sometimes a person will tell me they have been in sales before. Those are sometimes the hardest to convince that the house will sell itself if you do a couple of “non-salesy” things I will tell you about. A salesperson won’t sell a house anymore.
